a short formal essay Nicholas Handler, is a junior at Yale University majoring in history. Handler is active in social justice organizations and hopes to become a human rights lawyer. I never expected to gain any new insight into homework, the nature of my generation, or the cornell dissertations changing landscape of American colleges, in homework, Lit Theory. Lit Theory is supposed to be the essay service class where you sit at the back of the room with every other jaded sophomore wearing skinny jeans, thick-framed glasses, an ironic tee-shirt and homework over-sized retro headphones, just waiting for lecture to be over essay, so you can light up a Turkish Gold and walk to lunch while listening to Wilco. That#8217;s pretty much the way I spent the course, too: through structuralism, formalism, gender theory, and post-colonialism, I was far too busy shuffling through my iPod to see what the patriarchal world order of capitalist oppression had to do with Ethan Frome. But when we began to friendship homework study postmodernism, something struck a chord with me and cornell dissertations made me sit up and look anew at the seemingly blase college-aged literati of which I was so self-consciously one. Letter: Fortunately, College Has Changed. This is in regard to your college essay contest that took place last year. The essay entitled Fortunately, College Has Changed by homework, Matthew Bender from the University of Arkansas has several factual errors and insinuations. Then entire first and second paragraphs are neither chronologically or factually correct.

How do I know that there are errors? Because I am Mervin Jebaraj, the club person referred to friendship in the opening paragraph. 1. A committee of students wrote the narrative essay game actual text of a proposed bill not a note. The idea began in November of friendship homework 2007 and essay writing not in the spring. Friendship Homework? 2. There was no staying up all night, and there was no on campus bbq.

The committee obtained a meeting with Sen. Madison after a lot of work and didn#8217;t just pass a note to her. Essay Writing On Computers? The committee also spent months working with her and friendship other legislators. to see the resolution passed. We don#8217;t appreciate the trivialising narrative of our work. 3. The resolution never asked for the creation of socially aware investments, the essay writing options already existed.

4. The conference I went to was well after the divestment process and was to share ideas about divestment with others as opposed to receiving inspiration for divestment. 5. There is an implication that I was skinny dipping and smoking marijuana in Belize. Neither is true. I hold the New York times in the highest regard and homework hope that you will take this seriously. In the dickens dickens essay fiction victorian future, I hope you check the. veracity of statements made before you publish them. Mervin Jebaraj, Research Assistant, Center for Business and friendship Economic Research. Liz Addison , 38, is a biology major whose goal is to become a large animal veterinarian. She has trained a winning racehorse and is interested in American presidential history.

Oh, the hand wringing. #8220;College as America used to understand it is coming to an end,#8221; bemoans Rick Perlstein and his beatnik friend of fallen face. Those days, man, when a pretentious reading list was all it took to lift a child from suburbia. When jazz riffs hung in the dorm lounge air with the smoke of a thousand bongs, and college really mattered. Really mattered? Rick Perlstein thinks so.

It mattered so much to him that he never got over his four years at the University of Privilege. So he moved back to live in its shadow, like a retired ballerina taking a seat in the stalls. Essay On Computers? But when the curtain went up he saw students working and studying and working some more. Adults before their time. Homework? Today, at the University of Privilege, the annual dickens dickens study victorian student applies with a Curriculum Vitae not a book list. Shudder. Frankie Thomas , is a junior majoring in cinema-television critical studies, with a minor in gender studies.

Her immediate plans include dropping out at the end of the year to write and/or travel. She is a film maker and a blogger, with interests ranging from the social history of the Victorian era to birdwatching to the novels of friendship homework Dawn Powell. I had the kind of college experience most people only dream about. Charged by the atmosphere of intellectual exploration, inspired by dickens dickens, professors who pushed me farther than I#8217;d ever imagined I could go, I made fascinating new friends at homework, Skidmore; together we discovered Nabokov and Kafka, Citizen Kane and Dr. Strangelove, and best essay service our own literary voices.

It was a three-week summer program. I was fifteen. Now I#8217;m twenty, halfway toward graduating from University of Southern California, and if I had a thousand dollars for every college student I know who Struggles With Depression#8230;well, I still wouldn#8217;t have enough money to pay my full tuition. But it would keep me going for a semester or two, assuming I didn#8217;t lose my own struggle and drop listlessly out. As our SATs would have put it, #8220;depression#8221; is to #8220;college campus#8221; as #8220;consumption#8221; is to #8220;Victorian orphanage,#8221; and ours is a generation of wheezing waifs.

Max Lance , 23, is a freshman at USC#8217;s School of Cinematic Arts, majoring in writing for film and television. He hopes to make his mark either with a #8220;life-changing TV show#8221; or by #8220;marrying someone rich.#8221; When I dropped out of college three years ago I would have completely agreed that college isn#8217;t the cultural experience that it was hyped up to be. Friendship Homework? As I return this September, I#8217;ve realized that it#8217;s a good thing it isn#8217;t. A Basketball Game? I completely agree that college as America used to know it has come to an end, but I believe that schools have changed for the better. The problem I had when I quit school the first time around was that I never adjusted to how schools have changed. I dropped out because of my mislaid expectations; the same ones that Rick Perlstein is nostalgic for.

I#8217;m going back to school because I#8217;ve realized what the college experience is like today and I#8217;m now more than prepared to abuse it. Like nearly everyone in my graduating class, I attended higher education because that#8217;s what we did next. College seemed more like 13th grade rather than a place where I would be opened up to radical people and homework ways of thinking. I spent my freshman and sophomore years doing what I needed to fight do to friendship get good grades because that#8217;s all I had done since kindergarten. And even though I worked hard to earn a 3.7 GPA, I dropped out of annual annual dickens essay study New York University because of friendship a complete lack of passion for what I was studying (journalism, via process of elimination). Travis Weinger , 21, is study victorian, a senior majoring in history, with a concentration in friendship homework, war, revolution and social change.

His minor is political science. He is fight, a founder of the Triton, a newspaper at UCSD, and homework of the best service Symposium, an on-campus discussion group. Rick Perlstein#8217;s article, boiled down, is simply an extended version of the bitching that every generation hears from the one that preceded it: #8220;Back when I went to school, we walked uphill in the snow both ways#8230;#8221; In sum, college mattered back when Mr. Perlstein went to it because that was when he went to friendship homework it. Since college has changed from when he remembered it, he wants us to believe that it has somehow degenerated into question, irrelevance. The vast majority of Perlstein#8217;s complaints fit under the above rubric. Our college experience is not as liberating as his was (no longer can we simply phone public intellectuals and bully them into visiting our dorms). Our activists are not as radical as his were (we don#8217;t take over enough buildings). Friendship Homework? Our connection to the Sixties isn#8217;t as strong as his was (our band members aren#8217;t former revolutionaries).

We are not as alienated from society as he was (we engage our world, not whine about it). Perlstein#8217;s claim that his experience was in some way both richer and narrative essay about a basketball game harder than the next generation#8217;s is an old one, and is continuously echoed by every generation. Like most complaints of homework this type, it is largely groundless and mildly insulting. To respond to it bit by writing, bit would validate his nostalgic whining to a degree it does not deserve. The Cultural Contradictions of American Universities. For the past twenty to thirty years, we have seen the great degradation of post-secondary education. Conventional wisdom suggests that the problem lies simultaneously within the hands of the politicians and homework the students. This narrative does not account for gmat essay question the history of college. Throughout the modern age, the role college played in friendship, the national debate was minimal. To this date, there has only been one president with a Ph.D., and both The New Deal and Truman#8217;s Fair Deal did relatively little for college and education in general (with the exception of the G.I. Bill).

And even today, most candidates on both sides of the isle have the same prescription for college: the problem is lack of funding, therefore, the solution is to increase funding. It usually ends at that. In order to find the true crisis of college, we must first look at its true purpose. A few months ago, Charles Murray wrote a controversial series of columns in the Wall Street Journal arguing, not that college had been written out of the national debate, but that its role is too great. Essentially, too many people are going to college who did not need college, but instead needed vocational training. Essay On Computers? There are serious problems with his logic to be sure, not the least of which is his obvious IQ-ism. While it is true that college is in need of some serious reforming, focusing solely on friendship homework IQ will not solve them, for annual study study victorian IQ is not the only purpose of college.

For example, there are, what a professor of mine called, #8220;latent overtones.#8221; That is, those unexpected, and unintended consequences of homework college learning. For example, one might discover a great philosopher that he#8217;s never heard of, or another collegiate finds that they enjoy a field of study which they did not expect. But this is, of course, part of the annual annual dickens essay study victorian intellectual journey of students. College exists not, as conventional wisdom suggests, to change the culture. It exists to create a new breed of intellectuals. All politics aside, students should exit college not knowing simply what to think, but how to think. This is friendship homework, where Mr. Murray and narrative essay about I agree.

He hits the nail on the head when he describes the purpose of college, that college is created to train the elites to do their jobs. However, this purpose has been lost in a quagmire of watered-down curricula and friendship homework fluff courses. And this brings us to the real problem of college: the essay searing anti-intellectualism of the youth. Education is the single most important factor in the growth of our country. Friendship? Specifically, higher education paves a future and provides opportunity for students that attend college and gives them a shot at a career.

50 years ago, college was strictly for the elite, high class Americans. Now, it seems that every common household has at least one family member attend college. But with the increasing drop out rate today, students seem less interested in learning at college and best essay their priorities change from their original goal of graduating. The importance of education today is a growing factor because the future of this country depends on the students in college today. College is misunderstood by many incoming freshman. All of the television advertisements and billboards encouraging students to attend college are used as bait to reel in student#8217;s tuition. Friendship Homework? Parents encourage their kids to attend college after graduating high school because they want to see their kids have a shot at success.

However, college is fight, not cut out for everyone. More freshman than ever are dropping out friendship, after their first year because college can be overwhelming through everything that takes place within campus boundaries. The pressures of fight homework college whether it#8217;s to friendship impress parents or maintain a high GPA grasps hold of gmat essay many students while they are in friendship, college, freezing them from work and attending class regularly. Back in the 50#8217;s and 60#8217;s when college was becoming so popular, people attended college solely to improve their education and learn through the college experience, in hopes of obtaining a career after graduation. Now, people attend college because their friends or girlfriend go there. Gmat Question? Many people attend college just to party as much as possible.

College can be misleading for teenagers fresh out of high school, and people who feel that continuing their education isn#8217;t the friendship homework most important factor in attending college should not apply. College matters because without a thoroughly educated society, America would fall to annual dickens study study its knees and homework regress into deep depression. Jobs would flounder because the people applying for them wouldn#8217;t get accepted without college degrees. Pat Brown expanded university development in California in 1966 to encourage people of every social class to attend college and gain a higher education. The reason for annual annual dickens study study victorian his rapid expansion was because the number of college students doubled from 1957 to 1967, and Brown decided in order to improve society and homework keep America running, more universities should be built to attract new students.

However, in 1997, only 54 percent of students that attended college as freshmen graduated with a degree six years later, 30 percent not even finishing their freshman year. Once students enroll in annual essay fiction study study, college, dropping out is the worst decision they can make. Homework? The opportunity cost of dropping can be detrimental to a student#8217;s financial standing. Dropping out annual annual dickens essay fiction study victorian, also means dropping tuition, and students are often left with debt to pay off depending on which year they dropped out. Entering in a low paying job, drop outs must slowly pay back student loans, which is why college is homework, so important to stick to and graduate once enrolled.

The likelihood of students being able to pay off student loans quickly after graduating is essay about a basketball, much greater than the friendship likelihood of a drop out game, paying off loans. Drop outs sometimes will only make enough money per paycheck to pay off previous college debts, not leaving any left over cash for leisure activities. Once choosing the decision to attend college, remaining in college is the most important decision a student can make, in order to avoid living a below average lifestyle. Young adults are fed by friendship, change. No matter how resistant or welcoming I am to change, when all is said and done change sustains me. On Computers? Two years as an undergraduate student at Fordham University have been made slightly easier by knowing this about myself, because college means change. Even with the still shrinking cyber community and the #8216;real world#8217; opportunities offered to many young people today, nothing can replace the rush of change attached to friendship the college experience.

College students are encouraged to essay make noise. When interviewed by Rick Perlstein for an article entitled #8216;What#8217;s the Matter With College#8221; students were very vocal. Hamilton Morris, a New York bred college student, described a college experience where many students hate school #8220;with a passion#8221; and friendship #8220;don#8217;t leave#8221;. Essay Service? Perlstein writes that Morris#8217;s feelings are proof of a #8220;culture of enervation#8221; which overwhelms many campuses today. Instead of seeing what Perlstein describes, students without hope or the will to friendship pursue their studies, I see Morris as describing a culture of annual study restlessness. Students who claim to friendship homework hate college but still do not leave are experiencing a kind of restlessness which comes with the package. Students experience change so quicklychanges of passions, opinions and interests. They are bound to become restless, especially when the off-campus world is within arm#8217;s length.

I often smile to think the best essay service review world is at friendship homework, my fingertips when I am surfing the internet, but the truth is my fingers are touching my keyboard, and I am planted in my kitchen chair drinking Diet Coke. College offers me the opportunity to shake hands with the leaders of business, art, science and medicinesomething the internet can not give me. College professors do not want students to be excited about school and cornell theory alonethey want them to take their passion into the world beyond the friendship homework campus. I am not writing this commentary for essay about my school newspaper. I am writing it for friendship homework New York Times Magazine, a publication Journalism majors like me aspire to work for. College urges me to aspire, to voice my opinions, and yes, to change.

The problem with colleges in the 21st century is convoluted with many deciding factors, resulting in a more complex position for gmat essay current college students to experience, unlike any previous generation of college students. In my opinion, being a college graduate student and one who has been involved in my school, I can honestly say that the biggest problem with our generation is the sense of nihilism, which is plaguing the our very core of our being. It is important to realize that this comes not only from college campuses, but the society in general; people just don#8217;t care. If they do care and homework want to be involved, societal pressures, mostly economic, is what keeps them from being invoked with the spirit of the writing on computers previous generations. There seems to be no sense of urgency when it comes to our generation. Nihilism will do that to everyone. I also find it interesting that the people who do want to be involved do not necessarily know what to homework get involved with. In the 60s, it seemed to be clear cut what the problem was; racism, sexism, or the writing on computers war in Vietnam. A contrast between the 60s generation and us now is that people do not what the problems really are.

The mentality when speaking to college students; they seem to focus more on trying to get that 80K a year job then the socio-political issues affecting us. It is friendship, evident that we value the service review dollar more so than we value the homework human struggle. So apathy also plays a role. It is important to realize that we must do something, otherwise everyone suffers. Sending your child to college is not an option in American society, and it#8217;s hardly a privilege at essay service, that. In today#8217;s fierce and fast paced world it is a necessity For most parents, thought goes into how they will even fund such a venture within the first few months of the child#8217;s conception. College funds and savings bonds, money from relatives and graduation parties, this all gets stored until an entire portion of that funding goes towards expensive college visits. Not only does the friendship child want to go to best essay service college, that child has picked out 10 in which there is an orientation at each for prospective parents. They want to see where their money is going, as well as where their child will sleep, learn, and become the successful adult they were meant to be. What is friendship homework, wrong with college?

As a successful student at a prominent Chicago school, I, for one, have plenty of opinions on the matter. Let#8217;s look at question, #8220;our war#8221; by first taking a retrospective glance at Vietnam. My father, a student at the time of homework Vietnam, was a conservative at a very conservative Indiana school. He still wore his GDI shirt most days of the club week and talked highly of the camaraderie between fellow students. There were protests that were actually allowed on his campus. When the students died in the Kent incident he remembers rallies against the war in their honor. He also remembers reading the names of the dead soldiers with the rest of his class, keeping in somber memory the fight his country was in. Bands of students were scared, there was a draft in effect. Everyone had war on the mind and as those 18 year olds took on their first years of college, they had a lot more to worry about than where the weekend#8217;s keg party was taking place. Homework? They were learning, growing, and forming opinions on the world they were entering by knowing their current events and essay writing being passionate about them. Of course, without the internet, their local papers brought them more world events and less Lindsay Lohan.

Being passionate about the world takes a certain naivety that forms when someone does not already have the friendship homework opinions of others so easily accessible. The internet has taken so much of this away from current students. In my experience, you only have to make a choice on which websites to essay read. Looking at our war today, many students walk away from friendship, it, choosing not even to recognize that it affects their daily world. There are many more cliques, many more places to falter, and narrative many more reasons not to care. Homework? Hold a pen in front of you and gmat look at it; notice its size and color in particular. Friendship? Now, slowly move it away until you have your arm fully extended. Essay Question? Notice anything different? Probably not, and that is how it should be. If we remember back to middle school science class, color is partially dependent upon the angle that light hits an object.

But we just moved an object, causing the angle to change from our perspective, and did not notice any change in color. The pen also moved further away without any apparent change in homework, size. I forgot the intricate details that explain why this happens, something to do with a portion of the brain that keeps our perceptions fluid . What I do remember, and cornell will never forget, is how cool this all seemed and how much more there is to the world when you get past the surface. College is friendship, a pretty different place today than it was for my parents thirty years ago. Club Homework? Then again, so were the two worlds in homework, which we were raised. Most kids in my generation were not raised in the Sandlot. We did not hang out at the malt shop after school. And we definitely did not attend any sock hops (or if we did, best believe we did not call them that). Best Essay? Instead, we started out playing on homework jungle gyms with woodchips and protective rubber flooring underneath. Eventually, we found ourselves being chauffeured to organized baseball practice, in a minivan. By high school, the narrative essay about a basketball game importance of getting into a good college had been seared into us and serious attention had to be allocated toward after-school activities and other kinds of enriching events to make sure that we were #8220;well- rounded#8221;.

Here#8217;s a fun game that anyone my age can play: ask your parents what they got on their SATs. If they can, you win! Basically, it is like hitting the lottery, since your parents have to be like one out of friendship homework a million. High school students in essay writing, the 60#8217;s did not pay $1,000 for an SAT class and definitely did not go to any Independent College Consultants. As Mr.

Perlstein stated, college was seen as a place sort of apart from the homework rest of the fight club homework world. Kids went there and were met with new people, ideas, and situations. Back then, as I understand it, college was not seen as a stepping stone or a rung on the ladder. You did not go with the mindset that it was simply a means to friendship end, a place to simply collect good grades and then experience the #8216;director#8217;s cut redux edition#8217; of college admissions in the form of graduate school, an annual dickens fiction study internship or a job. Why College Matters: A Response to #8220;What#8217;s the friendship Matter With College#8221; I suppose I should begin by saying that I don#8217;t go to a real college. I mean, I don#8217;t feel like I go to a real college. I don#8217;t take real classes. I don#8217;t live on a real campus. I#8217;m a music major and attend the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Peabody is an established music conservatory, one of the schools of Johns Hopkins University (despite what I say about it not being a #8220;real#8221; school).

In his essay, Perlstein is making it seem that today#8217;s college undergraduates and the ideals we pursue are somehow deficient. That we#8217;re missing out. He#8217;s especially concerned that we#8217;re nothing like the students of the 60s and 70s. He#8217;s right about that, but that is nothing to be ashamed of. We#8217;re students who want (or carry) the essay iPhone. We are environmental activists. We#8217;re more technologically savvy than Perlstein#8217;s generation. Homework? We get our information and communicate in annual annual dickens essay study study, a totally different way. We#8217;re amazing jugglers.

We#8217;re a new breed. It is interesting to read that the defining issue for the 1966 California gubernatorial race was college. For my sake, and homework I#8217;m sure for essay the sake of homework a lot of my peers, I wish it were still that way. College sounded romantic and fun. My friends argue that things have changed in the past 40 years, and that there are bigger fish to fry.

The war, for example. Making a living once college ends. When they start complaining, however, about dickens dickens essay study classes and stress, I ask them, #8220;aren#8217;t there bigger fish to fry?#8221; at which they sigh outwardly, roll their eyes, and throw their hands up in the air. I understand where their frustration lies. We still feel young in the scheme of things, and not ready to plan out our lives after college. It feels like we#8217;ve been doing nothing but planning since freshman year of homework high school. Who has time to worry anyway?

Right now, I am worrying if I have enough money to annual dickens dickens study pay the rent this month. Many of homework my classmates worry how to pay for the next semester. To be honest, when it came to college, most of us never really had a choice. Where I grew up, in Greenwich, Connecticut, there was never the option of #8220;college vs. no college.#8221; The choice was #8220;Ivy League vs. Essay Game? state school,#8221; or something along those lines. The whole getting-ready-for-college experience was important. Friendship Homework? As you thumb these pages, reader, loyal subscriber, conscious citizen with an appetite for inquiry and narrative essay about a basketball thoughtfulness, or may I say fellow American, you tell yourself that you want to homework sample a young student#8217;s intellect. Narrative Essay About Game? Certainly I do believe that my own college experience has been important, even critical, to my life and to my thoughts here and now, but young and impressionable does not necessarily partner with a tame, meaningful sense of hindsight#8230; My college experience has fostered some growth.

But for the nation? Lend me some relevance. Am I to accurately describe my confusion with you over coffee to tell you how this all breaks downI fit in the puzzle and I#8217;m one of the corners, right? Politics. We don#8217;t have movements, and we don#8217;t have causes. A choice between higher education and higher purpose has been made; show me one text message, fellow student, that you have wanted the whole country to friendship homework read.

Children live at school. Especially if they don#8217;t have much of a home life to live in the afternoon or evening, kids live and learn at school. College isn#8217;t so different, only first graders aren#8217;t expected to shape up all by themselves when they appear to service be wasting time. Oh, college students aren#8217;t either? Pity. I guess higher education isn#8217;t all that important. Maybe the problems of friendship homework higher education are just fronds atop a mirage of public schooling. Talk to Herbert Kohl, Jonathan Kozol, John Taylor Gatto, men who are trying to wake this country up, and they#8217;ll show you what#8217;s happening to my younger brothers and sisters.

Content in the shade, college students loaf, while in more dangerous environs, under the pretext that they are to essay about a basketball game learn, children sit down in their desks each morning in the arms of friendship a crumbling system. Annual Annual Dickens Essay Fiction Study Victorian? In college, we choose to sleep in, not to participate, excel, regress, etc. Friendship Homework? If higher education is important to the nation, why don#8217;t more people act like it? Better yet, if education is club, so important to the nation#8217;s future, why is it neglected? Important as it is, I feel proud to remember the words of Thomas Jefferson, who often can remind us of politicians#8217; and citizens#8217; true responsibilities: #8220;It is highly interesting to our country, and it is the duty of its functionaries, to friendship homework provide that every citizen in it should receive an question education proportioned to the condition and pursuits of his life.#8221; He speaks to friendship homework the politician, tells him to take a good look at his fellow Americans. What sort of education will he provide to match the condition, the quality of life? If the quality be poor, will he stick to poor schooling until lifestyles rise to essay about game the occasion? Try downtown Anywhere, where elementary schools have been forced to homework remove social studies and arts in favor of essay apparently year-round test preparation, for standards in English and mathematics. The #8220;need to know#8221; world and the world of standardization are one in the same, and friendship columns of service review darkened bubbles are in no short supply, though there#8217;s still a need to live.

The Problem with College: Why We No Longer See Ourselves As #8220;Part of#8221; a Community. One anomaly of American society is that our universities play only a marginal role in friendship homework, our culture. In other nations, like France where intellectual life is not centered on cornell dissertations their institutions of homework education, this may come as no surprise, but the virtues of American universities are indisputable. Academics wonder why they are allowed to essay question be the nation#8217;s intellectual leaders, but not its leaders, or even advisors, in the political or ethical arenas. Homework? Some are resentful of the mainstream society, thinking it apostate, as though they were priests of some outworn creed, but this alienation, which has developed in tandem with the evolution of academia, did not come because the society rejected the university as a social or moral authority, but rather because the fight club university ran out of the energy it took to function in this role. Friendship? This occurred, at least partially, because those of us in college found that the values we shared were not strong enough to unite us. Annual Dickens Dickens Study Victorian? From the time of Plato, the purpose of the university has not been to represent the society or culture in which it exists but to pursue truth. Most academics, who may disagree on what truth is in essence, would agree that it is a noble and homework worthy objective.

And, since truth is their goal, many of them think themselves justified in best essay review, being alienated from mainstream society. This does not mean their views are homogenous; I can testify that, at friendship, the University of Idaho (to name one example), the writing on computers politics of professors in the College of Business are not shared by the English instructors; but what the two departments have in common is their distance from homework, America#8217;s political center. This is largely because specialists in any field, whether that field is philosophy or political science, tend to feel invalidated if anyone could reach the same conclusions that they do. It is a telling fact that, at least until recent years, there was a higher percentage of self-described Marxist literary critics than blue-color workers. Nonetheless, this desire for academic innovation benefits the university in that it makes professors#8217; research original; it is for this reason that, whenever universities are rated according to prestige, the United States constantly is dickens dickens essay study study victorian, found to homework have the greatest number of prestigious institutions.

Even so, there is another facet to a professor#8217;s job, teaching. This requirement creates a dilemma for many professors: their strenuous educations and about a basketball game meticulous research has caused many of them to become opinionated, but, at the same time, they need to keep their students pacified while educating them in accordance with principles which the students may not share. Friendship Homework? Thus, they (and the students) learn that it is dickens fiction study study victorian, easier to ignore worldview-related issues. Providence Catholic School: 3 Types of Friendship …

Demonology: A Study of What Is Not. Demonology is one of the most misused terms in English, particularly by those relating the phrase to the occult. But what is it? The terms demonology and friendship homework demonologist are two of the most misused terms in dickens essay study victorian, the world of pseudoscience, and sometimes even within evangelical belief systems centered around modern interpretations of exorcism. A cursory search online reveals several “demonologists” and their work. Some appear in sensationalist photos displaying various wares as though taking on friendship a pseudo-witch hunter role against “the Devil” and “demons,” though they rarely explicitly define what they mean when using these terms. Occasionally, such types appear on television series like Ghost Hunters dictating their practice of “demonology,” yet they have no formal training or education, at gmat least none that is stated. Homework! Unfortunately, this is part of the problem. In a society more and more frequently forgetting the mystery and rituals of the narrative essay about game old world for modern technology and science, terms like demonology are more easily manipulated than one such as chemistry . It is not so simple to say “I am a chemist” without an actual background. Friendship! It would, in annual annual dickens dickens essay study study victorian, fact, be ridiculous.

Unfortunately, demonology does not share this same benefit, though it is an actual field of homework study. Why it has come to such misuse and what it really is are the main issues behind this article, which I’ll use as a springboard into further writings about the connections of “demons” to real-world phenomena and how myth has been used to explain the unknown. The term demon is today almost totally devoid of its original Greek meaning, which in narrative a basketball game, itself is not so simple, suggesting at times a sort of inner presence that must be controlled by reason, destiny, or even divine power (Zijderveld 2008). As a further complication the term δα iµ ων ( daimon ) occurs in Greek literature as both a noun and a verb (Gall 1999) and was later shifted to a position among things considered “evil” by Christianity as the religion struggled to gain ground over paganism. Christianity thus relegated various creatures and old gods to the position of “demons,” while contradictorily accepting certain practices as part of the friendship faith, such as the practice of visiting and venerating spaces of the dead (Viola and Barna 2012). Narrative Essay A Basketball! This, like the movement of the celebration of Easter and friendship homework some of its components over a previously pagan holiday (Leonhard 2006), was a natural progression to eliminate attachments to old religions and fight club homework practices, which were so ancient and familiar to our forefathers that their elimination was nearly impossible in certain cases (Spalding 1880). With any new religion that achieved dominance, the replacement of “the old” was something practiced for friendship homework, centuries, and essay writing on computers the process was not unique to Christianity. For the West, a “demon” became a thing of evil, attached to the “Devil,” which functions largely as a conglomeration of various old gods and mythical beings and leads to a discussion of demonology. “Demonology” first came into usage in the English language in roughly the mid-1500s, though it may have originated in conjunction with developments in what is known as the “witch craze.” The witch craze stemmed from a variety of friendship factors, including political upheaval through the end of feudalism, religious conflicts against various heresies, and social collapse through disease, urbanization, and the breakdown of the family from effects of the Black Death (Kieckhefer 1976).

Some of this frustrated energy of the Europeans was directed toward the symbolic entity of the “witch.” This led to the grand delusion of the existence of witchcraft and the subsequent mania that caused the torture and death of hundreds of thousands of service review people, mainly women (Ben-Yehuda 1980), starting in the late 1400s with the publication of the infamous Malleus Maleficarum ( Hammer of the Witches , Hexenhammer in German), which came almost 100 years after Pope John XXII’s proclamation against witches in 1326 (Ben-Yehuda 1980). Accusations of witchcraft were often established through “proof” of pacts with the Devil and maleficia, or any such events that caused an individual or their property harm but had no immediate explanation. Something as simple as pink eye, for friendship homework, example, was interpreted as a sign that a witch was at work in the community, as was a cow unable to provide milk or a sudden hailstorm. Not coincidentally, many such “mysteries” of the world were previously explained via demons or the restless dead. Fight! The term demonology , specifically, was originally in reference to friendship powers through demons (minions of the dissertations Devil) (Thorndike 1925) but was eventually closely linked to witches. Most writings from roughly 1580 until the friendship homework late 1600s, including various treatises, anecdotes, trial reports, and personal experiences of the so-called “demonologists,” became attached to the idea of witches and pacts with the Devil. In 1597, for fight homework, example, King James VI of friendship homework Scotland published his Daemonologie , in gmat question, which he refers to “the fearful abounding at this time in this country, of these detestable slaves of the friendship homework Devil, the Witches or Enchanters” (translated into modern English by the author). Such attachments of the witch to best review the Devil (and thus demonology to the witch) were rampant, as the witch craze reached epic proportions and was used by the Inquisition as a tool for combating various heresies and gaining more control for the Church (Russell 1984).

The prestige of the demonologists through this tactic assured the popularity of their writings and the spread of belief in witchcraft itself, an entirely contrived concept. It is beyond my scope here to detail the entire history of the friendship homework witch craze. It is enough to say that demonology at this time very rarely had anything to do with demons unless it related to the Devil, something that in itself was never very clearly defined. Demonology was specifically a field of the “study” of witches, perhaps to be rendered for our purposes as “witchology,” as Rossell Hope Robbins once suggested, and the focus of actual demonologists in the 1500s and following was primarily on pacts with the annual dickens essay study study Devil and the women under his power (Russell 2007). Women were generally the focus of the witch craze because of an assumed belief that they were more prone to homework having “bestial appetites” and, as some witch hunters believed, easily fell under the essay Devil’s sway because “there is nothing which makes a woman more subject and friendship homework loyal to a man than he should abuse her body” (Weber 1992). This is another matter I will not comment on further.

I wholly remove myself from this antiquated thinking. Aside from the atrocities committed against their fellow men and question women, at least some of friendship these individuals, these “demonologists,” actually believed in what they were discussing. Annual Dickens Fiction Victorian! Though their “proof” was certainly embellished, they still subscribed to friendship homework the theory that witches were real beings and pacts with the Devil and various workings of his powers were a thing of reality. Later writers would take these ideas and even create systems of demons in massive detail, all functioning under the Devil. These demons had various workings in the world, typically with contrived, fanciful names (see, for homework, example, Craig Cabell’s Witchfinder General ) or those taken from old gods. Francis Barrett, author of The Magus in the early 1800s, ascribed certain demons to particular human conditions. Beelzebub was the demon that caused belief in false gods, which in itself is ironic since by at least some accounts it was, in fact, an ancient god (Studni#x10D;ková 2009) So these ideas were quite real to many people at one time. This is because, in homework, its earlier roots, demonology meant simply a system of demons , a hierarchy, delineating the various evil spirits of the world and how they interacted with human beings through the powers of the dickens fiction Devil. Christianity had a fairly developed system of friendship homework demonology at one time, in fact.

This system slowly degraded into essay a vague conception of friendship homework “demon” or “the Devil” with no separation into different types, though believers may sometimes use the term figuratively and not ascribe literal interpretation (Livingston et al. 2006). But this is narrative about a basketball, much different than in homework, the past, when demons could be used to cornell dissertations define nearly anything at odds with popular belief. Proof of earlier systems of Christian demons can be found in such works as Collin de Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal , which provides various descriptions and whimsical depictions of demons based on popular knowledge and anecdotes, most fulfilling a variety of friendship roles in describing the essay on computers origins of “sinful” thoughts and behavior. Either way, earlier Christian belief held strong the idea in the existence of minions of the Devil who had the ability to corrupt human existence through various means. The point is that regardless of what they were, in Christianity all demons answer to friendship homework the Devilto some greater “evil” source (Summers 1925).

This is not unique to the religion; every culture in the world from the most advanced to the most primitive has some conception of “demon,” usually functioning within the framework of a general evil force. We in cornell, the West simply define this “evil force” as the Devil, or Satan, in homework, terms of traditional Christianity. Demons, generally speaking, fit into best service the basic mythological view of a particular people and their worldview and should be defined as any sort of malevolent being that seeks to harm or irritate, whether it be a human being, their crops, cattle, or even household items. It does not, and did not mean such a creature was aligned with the Christian Devil as many Westerners understand it today. The Slavs, for example, had a very elaborate system of friendship demonology that still persists in certain forms, with creatures like the about game rusalka that lived near rivers and friendship were dangerous to men around spring, to house sprites known as domovoi that were extensions of earlier practices in ancestor worship (Vlasova 1994).

Thus the “demon” is not a Christian invention; it is an gmat question, invention of humankind and a universal phenomenon, typically the result of misunderstandings of bodily phenomena, especially diseases. Most Westerners with a Judeo-Christian background have a preconceived notion of friendship “demon” attached to fight club homework concepts of hell or Satan, when in fact a demon should be understood simply as any sort of malicious spirit that plays a part in the mythological structure of a culture. Homework! This has gone from specific ideas to a general sense of “demon” or simply “the Devil” for gmat essay question, much of the Christian west. Demons that were once used to explain emotions like rage or instilling senses of vengeance are today believed by many Christians, especially fundamentalists, to come from the Devil himself (Herriot 2008), and are typically not given any individual powers. Demons for friendship, modern Westerners are quite similar to our conception of “angel,” which went from a more detailed system of various tiers of celestial beings to essay a simple, universal (albeit vague) concept of friendship homework a benevolent being connected to God who helps the human race (Muehlberger 2013).

Now that I’ve defined and explained the history of the term demon , let’s consider the term demonology once again. Specifically, what is the cause for narrative about, modern misusages of the friendship term? Early on, the term was connected to hysteria concerning witches and was thus perceived as the study of fight homework real things as they pertained to friendship homework witchcraft . That is not the case today; there is no witch craze, and question very few people would admit that they actually believe in friendship, witches (aside from pagans who believe in Wicca, for example). Demonology , as a term, has a dual nature, with two separate meanings. First, demonology can be defined as an actual belief system, one of faith of a particular people, which is outside the realm of science and a matter for religion. The Etoro, of gmat essay New Guinea, for friendship, example, have a belief in different malevolent spirits and thus a system of demons that explains how these beings work within the framework of the rest of the world and gmat other realms beyond human experience. This is demonology’s first definition: a system of mythological categorization of friendship malevolent beings within a greater mythological system particular to a group. Mythology here refers to a system , not a statement that a religion or beliefs concerning it are “true” or “untrue” (Puhvel 1989). The succubus, for example, was originally part of the cornell system of beliefs in ancient Sumeria, a female demon that would have sex with men during sleep (Rosen 2008). Today this could be interpreted as an explanation for friendship, nocturnal emissions or sleep states such as sleep paralysis. Any group can have a system of demonology, one that explains what type of evil, malevolent beings exist, perhaps also how and why they interact with the world, often to explain things unknown.

But this is religionor at least folk belief functioning within religionnot something to be studied but rather something believed . Review! In addition, as you may assume, as knowledge increases, demons begin to friendship disappear. In the second definition of the essay term, demonology is, as a field, the study of demons as myth . It is a subset of a broader field with a specific focus, like a lagomorphologist within biology; in this case the field is mythology. Mythology is commonly divided into two main areas: upper mythology, concerning the gods, the heavens, benevolent beings, etc., and lower mythology, concerned with the underworld, evil gods, the restless dead, ancestor spirits, demons, and similar figures (Willis 1993). This separation into two main branches is simply due to friendship homework the fact that human beings have always thought in dichotomies, so naturally we categorized our world into writing on computers concepts of “good” and “evil”; the same delineation may be used in a study of such things stemming from our myths (Eccles 1991). Demonology is friendship, just a subset of lower mythology, simply the study of the writing myth of demons . So, should you wish to study the friendship homework demonological system of ancient Greece, your focus would be on annual essay Greek demonology. Friendship Homework! It does not mean you actually believe in these demons (or any for that matter), it means you study the demons of this particular culture in the specific context of gmat essay their mythological function, which in most cases was used to explain natural phenomena not understood at one time. The demonologist, then, is the person who studies demonology, the myth of demons, including their sociological and psychological functions. As such, calling oneself a “demonologist” and then performing “exorcisms” is entirely at odds with the homework actual meaning of the term.

A demonologist may study curses, cures, and practices of exorcisms in the context of particular demons, and may even know how to “perform” them, but that does not imply belief in these matters. Most demonologists have studied under others in writing on computers, an educational setting that typically revolves around folklore or anthropology, sometimes sociology. As such, the actual study involves accessing materials generally available. Many rare books, such as Collin de Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal , are easily accessible, but without proper training or education, how can one understand what one reads? Demonology requires knowledge in homework, history, archaeology, theology, mythology, sociology, medicine, and cornell dissertations psychology. Even something as simple as a recipe passed down over generations may contain elements important to the study of a specific demon.

Garlic and the vampire, for friendship, example, were tied together long ago, and the herb plays a large role in Eastern European cuisine even to this day, largely because of that connection. Demonologists should never state their beliefs about demons, if they even have any. Cornell! This is a matter of faith and religion, which is outside the study of demons as myth. Second, a demonologist must make a thorough study of the demon in question, and this involves several important areas completely ignored by friendship charlatans. In essence, to understand a single type of demon, a demonologist must research the background of the essay idea. This will always involve a study of the history of a culture, geographical roots, linguistic variations, historical writings, anecdotal evidence of “true” experiences of the creature, folklore, literature, natural phenomena related to the demon in question, and a variety of other topicsalmost anything imaginable, including sociology and disease theory. Homework! The latter field is in fact the root of many demon myths due to simple misunderstanding of natural bodily processes. Demonology is never a system to “cure” those who believe in homework, the existence of such creatures, which in itself is a serious disregard for knowledge and an abuse of human emotions. Demonology is a real field of study, frequently misused by those who do not know the true meaning of the term. To be a demonologist involves a thorough and detailed approach, but never one attached to faith. Demonology is a study of the friendship homework myth of best service demons, nothing more.

Those who engage in using the term demonology in the sense of religion are practicing an entirely different field of study outside the scope of the mythology of demons. Ben-Yehuda, Nachman. 1980. Introduction A Nation of Children Calls for Reform Baby Steps The Innocent Ideal Consuming Childhood The Cult of the Child Strange Inconsistencies Recommended reading. In 1799, children’s author and educator Hannah More reacted against cornell, the revolutions that had recently taken place in America and France in terms that tell us a great deal about the child’s place in British society at friendship homework, that time. Denouncing Thomas Paine’s radical insistence that all men are created equal, More argued that recognizing the “rights of man” was an absurd idea. Next, she scoffed, reformers would begin to discuss the rights of women, and gmat essay, then (even more ridiculously) “our enlighteners [] will illuminate the world with grave descants on the rights of youth, the rights of children, the rights of babies” (Walvin 45). The idea that children have rights that the state should protect may have seemed silly at homework, dawn of the nineteenth century, but by the time Queen Victoria died in 1901, it had gained significant support. Beginning in the 1830s, the Victorians passed a variety of laws aimed at protecting the wellbeing of a basketball game, children at work, at school, or in the home.

This activism was motivated in part by a growing acceptance of the Romantic idea that children are innocent creatures who should be shielded from the adult world and allowed to enjoy their childhood. As the century wore on, writers and artists began to produce increasingly sentimentalized images of children, emphasizing their angelic, adorable qualities. Yet despite such rhetoric, real reform did not come quickly. High infant mortality rates, inadequate schooling, and child labor persisted right to the end of the century, suggesting that many Victorians remained unconvinced that childhood should be marked off as a protected period of dependence and development. A Nation of Children. Victoria’s England was a child-dominated society. Throughout her long reign, one out of every three of friendship homework, her subjects was under the narrative a basketball age of fifteen. The population explosion that occurred during this period was accompanied by friendship, a tremendous amount of industrialization and urbanization; by the end of the century, a vast majority of children lived in towns rather than rural communities. Essay A Basketball! Families tended to be large, although the birth rate declined a bit over the course of the century as more information on contraception became available. Homework! The rapid growth of towns quickly outstripped affordable housing, leading to overcrowding and shockingly poor sanitary conditions.

Coupled with infectious diseases and writing on computers, impure milk and food, these factors contributed to very high infant and child mortality rates. Poor children who survived infancy were often put to work at an early age. In the 1830s and 40s, many children labored in textile mills and coal mines, where working conditions often proved deadly. Girls as young as five went into homework domestic service as nurses or maids to wealthy families. Rural children worked on farms or in essay service cottage industries, while thousands of urban children worked as street hawkers, selling matches or sweeping crossings (see figure 1). Friendship! Child labor was not new, but as industrialization continued it became more visible, as masses of ragged, stunted children crowded the city streets. Calls for best Reform. Philanthropists, religious leaders, doctors, journalists, and artists all campaigned to improve the lives of poor children. In 1840, Lord Ashley (later the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury) helped set up the homework Children’s Employment Commission, which published parliamentary reports on conditions in mines and collieries.

The shocking testimony contained in these reports inspired Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s famous protest poem “The Cry of the essay service review Children” (1844). Shaftesbury went on to become president of Ragged School Union, an evangelical organization which established hundreds of schools for the poor. Famous child-savers like Mary Carpenter and Dr. Thomas Barnardo taught in Ragged Schools before opening their own institutions for destitute youths. Dr. Barnardo described some of friendship, his missionary efforts in essay the Children’s Treasury (see figure 2), while investigative reporters like Henry Mayhew tirelessly documented the dire conditions endured by many working-class families. The novels of Charles Dickens, the most popular author of the Victorian era, also reveal an intense concern about the vulnerability of children.

When Dickens was twelve, his father was imprisoned for debt and friendship, he was sent to work in a blacking factory, an incident that haunted him his whole life. His novels are full of neglected, exploited, or abused children: the orphaned Oliver Twist, the crippled Tiny Tim, the stunted Smike, and doomed tykes like Paul Dombey and essay writing, Little Nell. Like Barrett Browning, Dickens was galvanized by revelations of real-life horrors facing the poor. Oliver Twist (1837) was written in response to the draconian New Poor Law of 1834, which had been inspired by the theories of utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham. This law relegated the needy to prison-like institutions called workhouses, splitting up families and subjecting them to repugnant living conditions and hard labor. Similarly, in creating the pathetic character of friendship homework, Jo the street-sweeper in Bleak House (1852-3), Dickens was inspired by cornell, the testimony of a real child laborer interviewed in an 1850 law report.

Both boys admit, under questioning, that no one has ever bothered to friendship teach them anything, not even the narrative a basketball game shortest prayer. Jo’s dramatic death scene enables Dickens to fulminate on the fate of such forlorn waifs: Dead, your Majesty. Homework! Dead, my lords and fight, gentlemen. Dead, Right Reverends and Wrong Reverends of every order. Dead, men and women, born with Heavenly compassion in friendship homework your hearts.

And dying thus around us every day. (Chapter XLVII) It is easy to interpret the outraged activism of writers like Dickens as indicative of a transformation in public sentiment about children. But such protests were fuelled by the fact that many people still believed that children did not need to annual dickens fiction study be shielded by the state from adult responsibilities. Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert spoke for many when he argued that the working man’s children were “part of his productive power,” an indispensable source of family income (Horn, Town Child 100). Thus, although legislation aimed at friendship, regulating and reducing child labor was passed throughout the essay service review century, there was no attempt to outlaw it completely.

Loopholes in laws like the friendship homework 1833 Factory Act and the 1867 Workshops Act, coupled with a lack of best service review, local enforcement, meant that many children continued to homework work. As late as 1891, over 100,000 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 were still employed as domestic servants in England and Wales. Fight Homework! That same year, the British government dragged its feet at raising the friendship minimum age for part-time factory work from club homework 10 to 11, even though they had promised to extend it to 12 at an 1890 European congress on child labor. Education reform also proceeded at a slow pace. In the early 1860s, the Royal Commission on homework, Popular Education declared that compulsory schooling for all children was “neither obtainable nor desirable.” If the child’s wages are crucial to the family economy, they wrote, “it is far better that it should go to gmat essay question work at homework, the earliest age at club, which it can bear the physical exertion than that it should remain at school” (Horn, Town Child 74).

Another powerful impediment to friendship homework the creation of a public school system was religious; dissent between the Church of England and nonconformists over the content and gmat question, amount of religious instruction stalled legislative efforts until 1870, when the Elementary Education Act finally created a national network of primary schools. Homework! A similarly provision for secondary education was not passed until 1902. Writing! Middle- and upper-class families could employ tutors, or send their children to private schools, but these were unregulated and varied widely in quality. Homework! Girls were worse off than boys, since many people believed that domestic skills and basic literacy were all they needed to learn. What explains the sluggish pace of reform? The rise of industrial capitalism created a huge demand for cheap labor, which children certainly were. Responding to this boom, Victorian economists and politicians embraced a laissez-faire approach which involved keeping state interference to a minimum. Cornell Dissertations! Forced to homework fend for themselves, many families endured such extreme poverty that their children’s wages were indeed crucial to their survival. Essay Service! And although the Romantic belief in childhood innocence was spreading, many clung to homework the Calvinist notion of original sin, which held that work was good for children, since “Satan finds mischief for idle hands to do.”

The Innocent Ideal. Nevertheless, as the century wore on, more and essay question, more people began to accept the idea that childhood should be a protected period of education and enjoyment. However slow education reform was in coming, it did come: in 1851, fully one third of English children received no education at all, whereas by the end of the century, nearly ninety percent went to school for seven to eight years. At the same time, there was an friendship explosion of books, magazines, toys, and games aimed at entertaining children. Indeed, children’s literature blossomed into what critics call its “Golden Age.” With its rollicking depiction of nursery life, Catherine Sinclair’s Holiday House (1839) is often regarded as a landmark text that shifted the focus of children’s fiction from cornell instruction to delight. Classics like Edward Lear’s A Book of Nonsense (1846) and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) carried on this tradition. Mixing fantasy and realism, authors like Juliana Ewing, Mary Louisa Molesworth, and E. Nesbit painted a vivid picture of the middle-class nursery as a hotbed of hobbies: private theatricals, elaborate games, gardening, the composition of family magazines, and so on. Like Dickens, children’s authors often voiced their belief in the perfect purity of the young, as when Carroll enthused, “Their innocent unconsciousness is very beautiful, and gives one a feeling of reverence, as at the presence of something sacred” ( Letters 381) Such sentiments became increasingly common in sermons, poetry, and periodicals from this period; the Victorians often quoted Wordsworth’s claim in the Immortality Ode that “Heaven lies about us in our infancy!” Artists like Charles West Cope and John Everett Millais produced dozens of homework, domestic genre paintings with titles like The First Music Lesson (1863) and My First Sermon (1862-3), which portray the child as a bastion of simplicity, innocence, and playfulness. Women were also praised for embodying these qualities, and together with children they were urged to inhabit a separate sphere: to on computers withdraw from the homework workforce, embrace their status as dependents, and provide the male breadwinner with a refuge from the dog-eat-dog capitalist world outside the family. Ironically, though, even as the Victorians represented children as opposed by nature to dissertations the materialistic world of trade and profit, the figure of the child was commodified and homework, put on display as never before.

For example, the Pears Soap Company bought reproduction rights to question Millais’ paintings Cherry Ripe (1879) and Bubbles (1886), and placed the images in advertisements and calendars (see figure 3). When Cherry Ripe was featured as a color centerfold in a Christmas annual, the homework magazine quickly sold 500,000 copies. Annual Dickens Essay Fiction Victorian! Kate Greenaway also took advantage of the increased public appetite for images of childhood; her watercolors of children playing appeared not just in her wildly popular books but on tea towels, wallpaper, stationary, soaps, and clothes. Actual young people were paraded before the public as well. New presentation furniture like the bassinet and the perambulator allowed infants to be displayed to an admiring world. Child actors appeared on stage in record numbers, performing in pantomimes, ballets, operettas, straight dramas, minstrel shows, music halls, and homework, circus acts. By the 1880s, Drury Lane Theatre was hiring 150-200 children per pantomime. Annual Dickens Essay Fiction Study! Child prodigies like Jean Davenport and Lydia Howard astonished audiences by playing multiple roles in the same evening, while numerous companies routinely ran all-child productions.

For example, the famous D’Oyly Carte Opera Company had a children’s troupe which put on homework, Gilbert and Sullivan operettas without the help of a single adult performer. The Cult of the Child. As children became more visible on the stage, the question naturally arose: did such work constitute labor? Considerable controversy arose over narrative a basketball game, this issue in the 1880s. Educational activists like Millicent Garrett Fawcett insisted that children under ten should be banned from full-time theatre work as they had been from homework factories and workshops. Theatre people and other artists, including Carroll and the poet Ernest Dowson, strongly disagreed. Acting was not a labor but an art, they maintained, and children benefited from and enjoyed doing it. Dowson develops this argument in his 1889 article “The Cult of the Child.” As his title indicates, however, the question insistence that children “delight in” performing quickly gives way to the admission that adults delight in watching children perform. “Disillusioned” grown-ups, tired of facing the complexities of contemporary life, find relief by turning their attention to children: “[T]here are an ever increasing number of people who receive from the friendship beauty of childhood, in art as in life, an exquisite pleasure.” Dowson and other members of the dissertations “cult” insisted that contemplating the friendship innocent simplicity of essay a basketball, children served as a healthy corrective to the tawdriness and skepticism of homework, modern life. Religious doubt was on the rise, particularly after the publication of Charles Darwin’s findings about evolution. Some commentators have suggested that the a basketball child gradually replaced God as an friendship object of worship. But although adherents to gmat the cult of the homework child described their appreciation in religious and/or aesthetic terms, the art they produced reveals a disturbing tendency to best essay review conceive of the homework child as the ideal romantic partner.

In novels like Carroll’s Sylvie and essay on computers, Bruno (1889) and J. M. Barrie’s The Little White Bird (1902), besotted bachelors pursue children rather than women, while Dowson wrote a sonnet sequence celebrating the charms “Of a Little Girl.” Dowson also fell in love with an eleven-year-old named Adelaide Foltinowicz, proposing to her when she was fourteen. He was not alone; eminent Victorians like John Ruskin and the Archbishop of Canterbury also wooed young girls, and friendship homework, child prostitution was an accepted if deplored fact of London life. To our eyes, the fight club Victorians seem very inconsistent in terms of their attitudes toward children. Child-worshippers who waxed rhapsodic about the friendship perfect purity of children simultaneously eroticized them. Even as sentimentality about childhood reached new heights, the essay notion that all children are savages likewise gained widespread support; many Victorians accepted the friendship homework “Law of Recapitulation,” which stipulated that as a child develops, he or she repeats the best service review stages of development of the human race.

This belief in “the savagery of all children and the childishness of all savages” served a justification for subjecting children to friendship homework harsh discipline, and natives of other countries to the rule of the expanding British Empire (Cunningham 98). These contradictory impulses of cruelty and concern informed the actions of individual Victorians. Journalist W. T. Stead provides a perfect example. In 1885, he launched a campaign to raise awareness about child prostitution and writing, prod the government to raise the age of consent. Homework! But his method of pursuing these admirable goals landed him in narrative about a basketball jail. To prove that virgins were being sold on the street in record numbers, he abducted a thirteen-year-old girl without telling her parents what he planned to do with her. Friendship Homework! After subjecting the unwitting girl to a medical exam to prove her purity, he drugged her, pretended to accost her, and annual dickens dickens essay fiction study study victorian, sent her off to Paris.

The lurid account he wrote of these events featured headings like “The Violation of Virgins” and “Strapping Girls Down.” It reads like pornography, yet it helped assure the homework passage of the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1885, which raised the age of consent from thirteen to sixteen. This bizarre event encapsulates some of the conflicting discourses circulating around the Victorian child. Boone, Troy.
