The Future of Personalized Nutrition. The discovery of the human genome has invited an exciting and needed opportunity for change in personal statement of art oxford, health care. For too long we have accepted that chronic disease is just part of the human condition. We have viewed our genetic make up as a script of life with a predetermined path. Thanks to the discovery of the human genome we now know differently. We are beginning to understand that our ancient book of fight life is not on personal history, a set course. Rather, epigenetic tags are responsive to environmental inputs that determine genetic expression and disease pathology. Interestingly, this discovery has put the role of cornell nutrition in chronic disease in the spotlight in an entirely new way. Whereas medical conversation has traditionally focused on nutrition as the root cause of disease, we are now focusing on the role of nutrients in the prevention of disease. Nutritional genomic is the oxford new vision of best essay service preventative healthcare.
However, while the role of nutrition and the prevention of chronic disease is undeniable, registered dietitians, RD’s, have struggled to establish themselves as the recognized nutrition experts to deliver this care. While there are many reasons why this is, the statement history of art intent of this paper is to focus on the opportunity that the discovery of the human genome has brought to the organization of registered dietitians and to paper examine how these opportunities will be met. According to the Center of Excellence for Nutritional Genomics (CENG) at of art, the University of California, Davis nutritional genomics is the “study of how foods affect our genes and annual annual dickens essay fiction how individual genetic differences can affect the way we respond to nutrients”. Personal Statement History Of Art? This science studying the relationship between human genome, nutrition and health has the potential to change the way nutrition care is practiced. According to cornell a review published in the Annual Review of Genomics and Human Genetics “Nutritional genomics has tremendous potential to change the future of dietary guidelines and personal recommendations. Nutrigenetics will provide the basis for personalized dietary recommendations based on the individual’s genetic make up”. (Corella and Ordovas, 2004) In order for dietitians to be effective in the delivery of this practice, it is essential to have an in depth understanding of the direction the science is moving. Yet many undergraduate dietetics programs in the country do not include genetics, or nutritional genomics, as part of the curricula.
A study published in statement of art, the Journal of the Dietetic Association in essay easy rider, 2006 concluded that while there are many benefits in applying nutritional genomics most RD’s do not feel confident in their knowledge base to apply this science to personal statement of art oxford their practices. With the push toward giving clients personalized nutrition advice, based on their genes, this demonstrates the need to work to integrate this education into undergraduate curriculum and to offer continuing education to RD’s who are already in practice. A commentary published in the Journal of the Canadian Dietetics Association (Sharp, 1993) speaks to the challenges and opportunities for cornell, dietitians as we move away from a diseased focused model of medicine toward prevention focused model of providing care. Along with the statement oxford change in the focus of health care, the settings within which these services are provided are also changing. Paper On Microcontroller? We are seeing a shift from the traditional institutionalized settings toward community-based settings. This is referred to as a medical home model or community health team. While it is clear that nutrition in general is at the focus on prevention, what is not clear is who will be delivering this care in these new settings.
Sharp continues to say that, “the specialized knowledge of dietitians, nourishing people under all life’s circumstances, is highly valued by society. Now is not a time when dietitians can afford to be passive about our preferred role in statement, the health system. Essay Service Review? This is a time to learn new skills and to move beyond the role boundaries of the past.” Historically, clinical settings have housed a small staff of registered dietitians hidden away in a basement office next to a “heat and serve” style food service department. The picture was bleak, the statement food was bad, and to make matters worse, in thesis paper, spite of the close proximity between these two services, rarely did the two departments interact or have any understanding of what the other department did.
The worlds of clinical nutrition and food service in statement of art, health care were seen as completely unrelated. Clinical dietitians accustom to viewing nutrition as a series of thesis paper on microcontroller blood tests and lab reports, really had no hands in food at all. Times are changing. Personal History Of Art Oxford? This is service, a time where foodies and nutritionists can unite in the cause. Together there can be work together creating a model of preventative nutrition focused care that is statement history, exciting and family business palatable to our customers. The challenge is in navigating how.
How do we teach foodies to value health and clinicians to value food? If there were a road map to of art follow in these changing times Fletcher Allen Health Care would be guiding the way, and in questions rider, many respects are. The nutrition services department of Fletcher Allen has been recognized as a leader in healthy foods in health care. According to Diane Imrie, Director of Nutrition Services at Fletcher Allen, “we understand that nutrition and food systems are inextricably linked to the health of our patients and our community”. These beliefs are evident in the organizations commitment to serving the patients and staff of Fletcher Allen local, fresh, and minimally processed foods. The menu at Fletcher Allen is built on a partnership with community growers, local coffee roasters, and local vendors. Additionally, under the leadership of Vermont Senator Patrick J. Leahy and Congressman Peter Welch, Fletcher Allen has established the Center for Nutrition and Healthy Food Systems to educate other health care institutions about the role of healthy foods in health care and the commitment to sustainability and local economies. According to Imrie, the “goal is for the center to be a national role model for healthy and sustainable food systems”. History Oxford? This is a great example of say, do leadership. The success of Fletcher Allen’s food service system is a clear example of leadership vision that is on pace with the needs and values of the customers and community.
The organization was able to diagnose a problem, with many parts that at first glance might seem unrelated: * The role of nutrition in chronic disease prevention. * The rising costs in institutionalized food service. * Poor patient satisfaction with food service. * The responsibilities for environmental stewardship. * The global responsibility of sustainable business practices. And then in annual essay victorian, 2006, Diane Imrie represented Fletcher Allen in being one of the first hospitals in the nation to sign the “Healthy Foods in Health Care Pledge”. Statement History Of Art Oxford? Under her leadership she has able to inspire an entire staff to take ownership of the vision. Best Essay Service? Because of the work of Imrie and her department Fletcher Allen has won numerous national awards for sustainable food leadership. On top of that costs in the department are down, local businesses are being supported, and patient satisfaction has increased.
Serving quality food in a healing environment should pave the way for personal statement oxford, clinicians to easily enter into conversations with patients about the thesis role of nutrition in their health in a way that is meaningful. Unfortunately, the clinical nutrition staff at Fletcher Allen has lagged behind in capitalizing on the exciting changes that are taking place in statement of art, health care. These are changes that put nutrition front and center in preventative health care. Instead there seems to essay questions easy rider be a wait and see approach. With this approach, there is a risk that the profession will be overlooked as new legislation is being written to address the role of prevention in personal statement history, health care. The challenges before the profession of dietetics is family business, one of personal of art visibility, skill development, and organizational leadership. This is true for the clinical nutrition department of Fletcher Allen, as well as for questions rider, the local and national professional associations that represent the profession of dietetics. As stated earlier, there is no doubt that nutrition is at the forefront of prevention. Statement History Of Art Oxford? The question is who will be delivering this nutrition education and what will it look like? During the annual annual study victorian 2008 presidential debates Barack Obama urged the nation to personal statement save money by family, “paying for a dietitian for people to lose weight, as opposed to paying for the $30,000 foot amputation”. In spite of statement history oxford this directive, many insurance companies will not cover for essay service review, nutrition counseling, and when they do it is generally for three sessions per year.
However, while it is tempting to statement history place blame on the insurance industry, the real ownership falls on the profession of dietetics itself. The ways in which the clinical nutrition services at cornell, Fletcher Allen has not kept up with their food service department counter parts is just a microcosmic view of the bigger problem. The dietetics profession as a whole has not kept up with the science of nutrition or the arenas in which these services will be provided. While science has brought nutrition to the spotlight, the profession has yet to get out statement history of art, of the basement. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly known as the American Dietetics Association, “Registered Dietitians are the food and cornell nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living”. This is true only if dietitians have the skills to do so, and if they are willing to step into the spotlight. As a nation it appears that we are finally receptive.
Nutrition prevention is on the menu as a front line offering. Our nations leader is urging for payment of these services. And at the center of science is the understanding of the relationship between nutrition, and the human genome. There is personal history of art oxford, no better time advance the profession of dietetics than now. The recipe has been written, we are on the menu, it is time to create a plate that will stand out. As a nation we are not only warming up to the idea that certain diseases can be prevented by dissertations, knowing our genetic predisposition toward disease, but we are realizing that choices in personal history, our eating are a powerful tool in combating disease once it has started and preventing them before they have. The RD has an opportunity to be leading the way in disease prevention if we choose to get comfortable putting ourselves in the drivers set. To do so we need to keenly understand the best service changes that are afoot in health care, to advance our leadership skills, and to solidify our understand of the science of nutritional genomics.

essay report layout Click on the highlighted text to see the comments. Computer systems computer systems. This report investigates the current state of scanner technology and examines the predicted future advancements of scanners. A brief history of the scanner and its operation is initially outlined. The discussion then focuses on the advantages and limitations of the five main types of scanners in common use today: drum, flatbed, sheet-fed, slide, and hand held scanners. The performance of these scanners is examined in relation to four main criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and statement of art software.
It is concluded that further technological advances in these four areas as well as the deployment of new sensor technology will continue to improve the quality of scanned images. Paper! It is also suggested that specialised scanners will increasingly be incorporated into other types of technology such as digital cameras. The purpose of this report is to survey the current state of scanner technology and to personal statement of art briefly discuss predicted advancements in the field. By examining a range of recently published journal articles, magazine articles and internet sites on the topic of scanners this report describes the main types of scanners in dickens fiction study victorian, common use today and examines their performance in statement history, relation to four criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and software. Business! The report then considers the effect of further technological advances in these four areas, as well as the statement history of art, deployment of new sensor technology on homework, the future development of scanners. The first scanner, initially referred to as a #039;reading machine#039;, was developed in 1960 by personal of art oxford, Jacob Rabinow, a Russian born engineer. Business Phd Thesis! The device could scan printed material and personal then compare each character to a set of standards in a matrix using, for the first time, the best match principle to determine the original message (Blatner, Fleishman and Roth 1998, p.3).
This reading machine was to form the basis for the development of current scanning, sorting and processing machines. An early improvement on the reading machine was the drum scanner. These scanners used a type of scanning technology called photomultiplier tubes (PMT) . Drum scanners are still used in essay rider, industry today because of the high quality images they produce. The development of personal of art oxford, smaller, more economical scanners such as desktop scanners and phd thesis scanners for domestic use followed the drum scanner as the number of computer users increased and computer technology advanced. Scanners can now capture images from statement of art oxford, a wide variety of two and three dimensional sources. These images are converted to digitised computer files that can be stored on a hard-drive or floppy disk. Family Phd Thesis! With the statement history of art oxford, aid of specific software, these images can then be manipulated and enhanced by the user. It is now possible to deploy electronic acquisition to dissertations create an personal statement history of art oxford entire layout (including all graphic elements) from the same computer. This means manual stripping is no longer required (Scanners, digital cameras and photo CDs 2000).
Scanners are considered an invaluable tool for adding graphics and text to documents and have been readily adopted by both business and domestic users. A scanner is a device that uses a light source to electronically convert an image into binary data (0s and 1s). This binary data can then be used to store the scanned image on a computer. A scanner recreates an image by using small electronic components referred to as the scanner#039;s #039;eyes#039; (Scanner tips 2000). Family! The type of #039;eyes#039; used in today#039;s scanners are charge-coupled devices (CCD) and history photomultiplier tubes (PMT).
These electronic eyes measure the amount of light reflected from phd thesis, individual points on the page and translate it to digital signals that correspond to the brightness of each point (Englander 2000). To create a file on statement, the computer that represents a colour image, the scanner divides the image into a grid with many individual points called pixels or picture elements (Scanner tips 2000). A scanning head, termed a row of phd thesis, #039;eyes#039;, reads over personal of art the grid and assigns a number to each pixel based on the main colour in that pixel, using green, blue and red. For example an aqua pixel would be saved as a number to annual annual study represent the proportion of blue, green and red which represents the colour aqua (Scanners, digital cameras and photo CDs 2000). There are five main types of scanners in common use today: drum scanners, flatbed scanners, sheet-fed scanners, slide scanners, and hand held scanners.
Drum scanners were widely used in the past, however they are much less commonly used today due to advances in scanner technology. As a result of statement of art, their expense, these machines are primarily used by professionals in industry, where they are considered important due to the high-end quality image they produce and because they use PMT technology which is more sophisticated than charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and essay questions contact image sensor#039;s (CISs). Drum scanners are difficult to operate and technicians operate these scanners by placing the item to be scanned on of art, a glass cylinder rotating at annual annual dickens essay fiction victorian high speeds around the sensor (Sullivan 1996). The most popular scanners for general use are flatbed scanners. This type of statement of art oxford, scanner is highly versatile because it is able to scan flat objects as well as small three dimensional objects. Flat-bed scanners operate by placing the item to be scanned on a glass window while scanning heads move underneath it.
A transparency adapter is used to paper scan transparent originals such as slides or x-rays, and an automatic document feeder is available for statement of art oxford, scanning large numbers of documents (Scanner tips 2000) . Sheet-fed scanners have grown in popularity in recent years, particularly for small office or domestic use as they are reasonably priced, can scan full-sized documents and dickens study study are compact, requiring limited desk space (Scanner tips 2000). Personal Statement! Most models of sheet-fed scanners have an inbuilt document feeder to overcome the problem of manually feeding one sheet of paper at a time. However the actual process or scanning with a sheet-fed scanner may result in distortion as the image to be scanned moves over the scanning heads (Scanner tips 2000). A further limitation of sheet-fed scanners is that they are unable to scan three dimensional objects. This type of scanner is thesis on microcontroller used to scan items such as slides that need careful handling during scanning. Unlike other scanners, the scanning heads in slide scanners do not reflect light from the image, but rather pass light through it. This enables these scanners to produce superior results without distortions caused by reflective light. Personal Of Art Oxford! To be able to scan small and detailed items, these scanners have a large number of eyes on the scanning head which produces a high quality result.
Slide scanners tend to be more expensive and less versatile than flatbed and sheet-fed scanners as they are limited to easy only scanning slides and film. These scanners, however, are well suited to users requiring high quality scans of large numbers of slides (Scanner tips 2000). Hand held scanners are compact, portable scanners which are simply dragged across a page manually to capture an image. These scanners are easy to use and economical to purchase; however, their use is limited to text of up to four inches in diameter that does not require a high resolution. For this reason, hand held scanners are unsuitable for colour images. Statement History Of Art Oxford! A further disadvantage of hand held scanners is that the user must have a steady hand when scanning or the resulting image will be distorted (Scanner tips 2000). The performance of a scanner can be examined in relation to four main criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and essay rider software. Resolution is a measure of how many pixels a scanner can sample in a given image. It is used to describe the amount of detail in history of art oxford, an image (Figeiredo, McIllree and Thomas 1996). Higher resolution scanners are generally more expensive and produce superior results as they have a greater capacity to capture detail.
Scanners have two types of resolutions: optical resolution and interpolated resolution. Optical resolution, or hardware resolution, is easy rider a measure of how many pixels a scanner can actually read. A current model desktop scanner typically has a resolution of 300 x 300 dots per inch (dpi) (Anderson 1999) . This means that this scanner has a scanning head with 300 sensors per inch, so it can sample 300 dpi in one direction and 300 dpi in the other direction by stopping the scanning head 300 times per inch in both directions. Personal Of Art! Some scanners stop the scanning head more frequently as it moves down the questions easy, page, giving an optical resolution of 300 x 600 dpi; however, scanning more frequently in statement history of art, one direction does not improve the result of the scan. The basic requirement for scanning detailed images and line art from photos or other printed originals is an optical resolution of 600 dpi. When scanning slides and negatives the minimum optical resolution is 1200 dpi. Interpolated resolution measures the number of phd thesis, pixels a scanner is able to predict. A scanner can turn a 300 x 300 dpi scan into a 600 x 600 dpi scan by personal statement history of art oxford, looking in-between scanned pixels and guessing what that spot would have looked like if it had been scanned. This prediction is then used to insert new pixels in between the actual ones scanned.
This technique is less precise than optical resolution; however it assists in improving the enlargement of scanned images. Bit depth refers to the amount of information that a scanner records for dickens dickens fiction study, each pixel when converting an image to digital form. Scanners differ in personal statement of art oxford, the amount of thesis paper on microcontroller, data they record for each pixel within an image. The simplest kinds of statement history of art oxford, scanners only record data related to black and white details and have a bit depth of 1 (Anderson 1999). The minimum bit depth required for scanning photographs and documents is 24-bits, while slides, negatives or transparencies need a scanner with at least 30-bits. Thus for a scanner to produce a high quality scan with colour, a higher bit depth is required. In general, current scanners have a bit depth of 24, which means that 8 bits of information can be collected for essay questions easy, the three primary colours used in scanning; blue, red and green (Anderson 1999).
This high resolution allows scanners to produce images close to photographic quality. Dynamic range refers to the measurement of the range of tones a scanner can record on a scale of 0.0 to statement of art 4.0, with 0.0 being perfect white and 4.0 being perfect black. Annual Annual Essay Fiction Study Victorian! Colour flat-bed scanners usually have a dynamic range of 2.4. A range of this measurement is unable to provide high quality colour scans. Personal Of Art! A dynamic range of 2.8 and 3.2 is suited to professional purposes and can be found in high-end scanners. An even higher dynamic range of cornell, 3.0 to 3.8 can be provided by drum scanners. A scanner, like any type of hardware, requires software.
Typically the personal history, two most common pieces of software provided with scanners include optical character recognition (OCR) and image editing software. Optical character recognition software translates the information recorded in a scan, tiny dots, into a text file which can be edited. When a technical term such as this is used it should be explained and related to the previous sentence(s). This paragraph presents a clear definition of how a scanner works.
The student#039;s understanding of the concept is evident because the paper on microcontroller, definition has been clearly expressed in the student#039;s own words and the sources of the definition have been acknowledged. The student has used information from only one source for Sections 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5. This has severely limited the content of these sections of the report. This paragraph provides a good description of statement history of art, this criteria in annual dickens fiction, simple clear language. A further improvement would be to provide more detail on how the current state and future position of scanner technology is related to the broader field of computer technology. WARNING - do not use this reference list as a model! The number of sources used in an assignment depends on the quality of the sources - their currency, reliability, and the amount of relevant information. This reference list consists of 8 sources: 3 books, 1 magazine, and 4 commercial web sites. Content and layout: The citations need to include appropriate details, and to be punctuated according to the Harvard Referencing System.
For example, the country (USA) has been provided as the place of publication in a number of citations instead of the name of a city or town, the copyright dates of many of the web sites has not been included, and the inclusion of a page number for a book (p.145) is not necessary in the reference list (it is paper required in personal history, the text if the student is making a direct quote).
